Ben Coleman
Ben Coleman is a British multi-disciplinary artist residing in Denver, CO. His practice is multidisciplinary, grounded in sound and performance, and often encompassing other media, including music, dance, video and installation.
Coleman grew up in theatre and music, and formed his first bands in London while simultaneously studying performance art. At that time, the city’s live art, nightclubs and experimental music scenes were exploding with innovation and risk, and he engaged passionately as a listener, performer, writer and maker. His performance and installation work retain the playful, participatory approach and scrappy DIY aesthetic that distinguished these scenes.
Moving to the US in 2006, Coleman instigated a slew of musical projects. Following a number of prolific years in bands Judi Chicago and Noot d’ Noot, among countless side projects, he reintegrated performance art into his practice, alongside new roles as composer, sound designer and installation artist. His practice has since grown through collaboration to encompass diverse projects with choreographers, visual artists, and theater practitioners, and an increasing range of curatorial projects.
His work has been presented by a variety of cultural organizations including the High Museum of Art, Alliance Theatre, PlatteForum, Zuckerman Museum of Art, Atlanta Contemporary, Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia, Gibney Dance, Dashboard, Georgia Institute of Technology, Flux Projects, Tanz Farm, the Object Group, 7 Stages, New Orleans Airlift, and Emory University. Coleman’s work has been featured in Hyperallergic, Arts ATL, Burnaway, Wire Magazine, Vice, Pitchfork, The Fader, Creative Loafing, Performer, Blender and WABE Atlanta. Coleman received his BA in Contemporary Performance Making from Brunel University, London and earned a certification in Music Recording & Audio Production from Recording Workshop, Chillicothe, OH.
