About The International Flag of Planet Earth
The purpose of The International Flag of Planet Earth is to represent the astronomical body of planet Earth. It’s a reminder to humanity that we share this planet no matter national boundaries, ideologies and religious beliefs - that we need to take care of this planet and each other.
The flag was designed by Oskar Pernefeldt in 2015 as his graduation project from Beckmans College of Design. The initiative has since its inception spread and reached millions globally.
The nonprofit organization was founded in 2020 and has grown organically since then to include individuals who work passionately to spread awareness about the flag.
The mission of the nonprofit is to serve as the awareness agency of The International Flag of Planet Earth": to make it recognized and utilized as the flag of planet Earth, and to share its message across the globe.
Our work is to provide a shift in mindset and promote the symbol behind which we can unite to work for sustainability, innovation, respect, justice, equality - caring for Earth and life on this planet.
Our job is to represent and promote the flag proposal. We do this through extensive outreach work, collaborations and awareness creation.
Why is The International Flag of Planet Earth Important?
When a flag like this is widely adopted, people are more frequently reminded of the message it represents. We firmly believe that its exposure will create substantial impact with social, cultural, environmental and economic ripple effects.
It is a symbol for that which unites us: Earth.
This flag will not save the planet, but it inspires those who will.
The Flag in the Wild
There are massive amounts of pictures of the flag being used around the world – flown as a flag and printed on merchandise, used by individuals, organizations and businesses.
It has been planted at Antartica, mentioned at the European Parliament, seen on refugee boats, marched behind by Jane Goodall, planted and presented by professional athletes, featured at sport events, used by MIT and other schools, towns and festivals, featured in video games, inked as tattoos, etched into in nano-technology, flown during protests, made into contemporary art. The list goes on. The flag is open source and free to use.
