Resident Alum Thomas "Detour" Evans Featured in The Washington Post

Thomas “Detour” Evans, a local Denver artist and RedLine Resident Alum, is turning heads once again—this time from 30,000 feet!

His latest public art piece at Denver International Airport, It’s Not What You Take, It’s What You Bring Back, was recently featured in The Washington Post for its stunning scale and storytelling power.

The piece suspends nearly 200 pieces of donated luggage in an infinity loop above Concourse B, honoring the personal stories carried by travelers every day.

Commissioned through Denver’s Public Art Program, the piece is a powerful reflection of Detour’s ability to connect deeply with place, people, and memory. His continued rise as a nationally recognized artist is a testament to his vision, talent, and dedication.

As a former RedLine Resident Artist, Detour has been part of a community designed to nurture experimentation and provide early-career support for Denver creatives. Through his art, Evans contributes to the cultural fabric of the city, sculpting a strong sense of identity and pride among Coloradans—and we couldn’t be prouder to witness his ongoing success!
