At RedLine, an integral element of our Artist-in-Residency program is to host various “Resource Artists” throughout the two-year residency.
Resource Artists generally have more professional experience and are further established in their career. The role of a Resource Artists is to share their expertise and offer professional guidance to artist residents.
Earlier this month, we welcomed two new Resource Artists: painter Ron Hicks and interdisciplinary artist Ana María Hernando.
To get a feel for the mediums and topics Ana María likes to explore, we think this snippet from her bio sums it up beautifully:
“Ana María Hernando, from Argentina and based in Colorado, is a multidisciplinary artist. She is interested in making the invisible visible, and devotedly explores the sacred feminine through women's rich histories, their daily lives and relationship to hand-worked textiles and wares. In her installations, Ana María uses textiles in abundance, and includes the work of women from around Latin America, from embroideries of cloistered nuns in Buenos Aires, to the weavings and wares of Peruvian women from the mountains.

We took a walk around Ana María’s RedLine studio and asked her a few questions about her current projects, what being a Resource Artist means to her, and more. Watch the video above, and read the full transcription below!
What Are You Currently Working On?
“I’m working right now on these tulle pieces that I’m making. I have a show at Robischon Gallery in June of next year, and another one at Sun Valley Museum of Art [in Ketchum, Idaho] next year. I’m working toward those two shows and the sculptural work that I do with tulle — it’s a way of making this tulle my own.
I’m making small pieces to design with the colors — this is for the Robischon Gallery show. Once I decide on these colors, it’s going to inform me about all the other pieces.
So I’m working on these, making the chicken wire, this piece I just finished. And then I have another one with other choices of course that I will try. And here I have my ideas, more ideas over here. So once I decide on these, I will begin preparing the big pieces.”

What does it mean to you to be a Resource Artist for the Artists-in-Residence at RedLine?
“To be a resource artist at RedLine — well first, I admire RedLine for what RedLine does for artists and how it builds communities for the artists. We are solitary people, and many times we work by ourselves. So to have a space where we can see each other — it’s an incredible way of supporting each other.
So for me, to be a resource artist is to be open, open to what may happen here and the flow of this community, and I’m happy to share my experiences. I’m happy to be here!”

What are you most excited about for 2022?
“It’s exciting for me to be here. I live in Niwot, and I have been in Boulder — I have a studio there — for 26 years. And I come to Denver a lot, but being here feels like an adventure — and I like it! A very expansive adventure.
I’m looking forward to developing my work here, and I still have my studio in Boulder, so to have a space that is open and that I can dedicate to these bigger sculptures is great.
I don’t have everything planned, but the things that I see, I like. I like to be here in Denver!”

Where to see Ana María Hernando’s Work
Ana María Hernando is slated for an extensive solo exhibition at the Denver Botanic Gardens entitled “Fervor,” on display until January 2nd, 2022.
In 2022, a collection of Hernando’s diverse works will be shown at Robischon Gallery (opening June 23rd), the Sun Valley Museum of Art in Ketchum, Idaho (opening June 17th), and at The Dairy Arts Center in Boulder (opening September 2022).
