Cherish Marquez — “The Rite of Spring…Break” Group Exhibition

What: Group Exhibition
Where: Evans School — 1115 Acoma St, Denver, CO, 80204
When: March 17-20, nightly from 7:30-9:30pm

Resident Artist Cherish Marquez will have works in this exhibition, which is presented at the Redline-supported Evans School and curated by Emilie Trice of the Denver-based artist collective Last/Resort Club

About the exhibition: The “Rite of Spring…Break” is a group exhibition that combines emergent digital artistic practices such as site-specific video projections and projection mapping, interactive installations, audio interventions, and augmented reality.

The exhibition’s title is a reference to Stravinsky’s famous ballet, “The Rite of Spring,” which ushered in a new era of modernism when it debuted in Paris in 1913. The infamous score is an early example of dissonance and is considered by many iconic musicians and scholars as “the most important piece of music of the 20th century.” The premise for the ballet was a pagan ritual in which “a sacrificial virgin dances herself to death.”

Spring Break — the week every March when university students typically engage in epic debauchery — is also a pagan-like ritual, worshiping sexuality and intoxication, but updated for the 21st century. Since the exhibition venue itself was originally a school, the theme of spring break is also a nod to the historical building itself.

Spring is also the season of rebirth and, historically, a universal source of inspiration for artists, writers, and musicians. The Rite of Spring…Break will interweave these themes in a weekend-long celebration that pays homage to — as Stravinsky said — “the mystery and the great surge of the creative power of spring.”

Artists include: Jeremy Billauer, Sarai Levinson,  Cherish Marquez,  Scott McKinney, Sharifa Moore, Austin Slominski,  Emilie Trice, Jullian Young, Joshua Ware, Eren Yazzie, and others yet to be announced.

About the artist: Cherish Marquez is from a very small town called Sierra Blanca, TX, a place that has been a significant inspiration to the artist's work. As a third-generation native of Sierra Blanca, Texas, the artist's body has been exposed to several personal and political atrocities. Sierra Blanca is located 16 miles from the Mexico border, which means she came into constant contact with border agents for most of her life. She experiments primarily with video games and interactive media that exist in similar spaces within her alternate universe. She has shown in galleries in the past, such as RedLine Contemporary Art Center and Leon Gallery. She completed her MFA in Emergent Digital Practices at the University of Denver.

Kelton Osborn - Solo Show

Image courtesy of Kelton Osborn. Jepun 2021, 51" x 51" mixed media on canvas

What: Solo Show
Where: Michael Warren Contemporary - 760 Santa Fe Dr, Denver, CO, 80204
When: March 8-April 9

About the exhibition: Kelton Osborn makes compelling mixed media works using a painterly language and conceptual framework from primary influences including architecture and abstract gestural mark-making.

These constructed narratives consist of textures, layers and positive/negative spaces that emphasize emotions as a primary conduit for his creative process. Each painting captures a series of intentional gestures and marks in combination with an intuitive understanding of color, form, composition and scale.

About the artist: My childhood memories inform my designs. Whether playing in the prairies with friends, catching lizards and snakes, or backpacking in the mountains with my parents – I have always enjoyed the process of exploration. Ironically, I was not a particularly good student in school. If I was not interested in the subject, I would draw in lieu of taking notes. A high school biology class with Mr. Wisner changed that. This is where I made the connection between exploration and learning. Through deep questioning, the world opened up to me and I began to approach life with the understanding that all things can influence our journey. My experiences have influenced my process of making.

Charles Parson - “Then and Now” Virtual 3-Person Exhibition

What: Virtual 3 Person Exhibition
Where: The Pontiac Creative Art Center -  47 Williams St, Pontiac, MI 48341
When: March 12-April 18

About the exhibition: Colorado-based artist & former Redline Resource Artists has 75 one-person exhibits throughout the country. In 1972, three graduate students from nearby Cranbrook Academy of Art presented a largescale exhibit entitled "III Constructivists," at the Pontiac Creative Arts Center. This exhibition addressed each of their movements from  a flat painting premise to more dimensional approaches. All three young artists — Richard Ancona, Larry Holmes and Charles Parson — were deeply influenced by the climate and culture of the times as well as the historic Cranbrook atmosphere with its staff of luminary artists and designers.  This exhibit received  significant attention at that time.

50 year later, reconnecting during the Covid era, the three artists have put together a virtual exhibit of an overview of the differing directions each have developed in their works and careers. The exhibit presents a virtual presentation focusing on a representation of each artist's works from each of the five decades in this span from Then to Now.

These works portray the distinct departures each developed, building upon the core foundations they shared of their formative years of education, studying with working artists and designers who spoke with their actions as well as words. An additional gallery of drawings from each artist further presents the role that this discipline has additionally played in their art.

This display, seen from March 12-April 18, has a virtual and live opening on March 12, 6-8 p.m. EST with a live stream with the 3 artists, who reside in Delaware,  Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

About the artist: Charles Parson was a Resource Artist at RedLine from fall 2018-spring 2020. He has over 75 solo exhibits throughout the United States. He has over 80 one-person exhibits throughout the U.S., along with an extensive participation in group exhibits, as well as large scale installations and monumental public sculptures which have been seen in places such as New York City, Chicago, Kansas City, and more.
